Murder of Yanukovych’s Former Adviser in Spain: Mafia Trail or Political Execution?
On Monday, May 20, a brazen assassination took place in the elite suburb of Madrid — Pozuelo de Alarcón. Former adviser to fugitive Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, Andriy Portnov, was shot dead in broad daylight near a school. The attacker approached Portnov’s car on a motorcycle, fired at least five shots, and then fled the scene on foot, leaving Portnov’s body inside his Mercedes. Spanish media described the killing as “executed in classic mafia style.”
Who Was Andriy Portnov?
Andriy Portnov was one of the key figures in the Yanukovych regime, serving as Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration. He played a major role in shaping legal policy and was known as one of the authors of the notorious “dictatorship laws” passed on January 16, 2014. Following the Revolution of Dignity, Portnov fled Ukraine, and criminal proceedings were launched against him. However, in 2019, he returned to Kyiv, where he became actively involved in media activities and filed numerous lawsuits against Ukrainian officials.
Mafia-Style Hit or Political Assassination?
Spanish outlet El Correo de Pozuelo reported that the attack occurred near a school, and the shooter was dressed in black and wore an orange waist bag. After the shooting, he fled toward Casa de Campo park. So far, police have not apprehended any suspects.
The nature of the crime — a public killing in a crowded area — raises suspicions about the motives. It could have been either a mafia-style retaliation or a politically motivated hit. Given Portnov’s background and connections, both possibilities appear plausible.
Reaction from Ukraine and the World
As of the time of publication, Ukrainian authorities have not issued any official statements regarding Portnov’s murder. However, social media has been abuzz with speculation about a possible link between his activities and his death. Some users have called it “justice,” while others see it as a warning to former allies of Yanukovych.
What’s Next?
Spanish police are continuing the investigation but have yet to report any arrests. Ukrainian law enforcement may also become involved in the investigation, considering the victim’s citizenship and political history.
This murder could have significant consequences for Ukrainian politics and international relations. If a political motive is proven, it may influence how former members of the Yanukovych regime are viewed — and how safe they feel — abroad.
