Talking to GameInformer on the occasion of the PlayStation’s anniversary, Jim Ryan, president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, briefly turned his attention to the PlayStation Vita.
In GameInformer’s extensive talk about the PlayStation family of consoles, both the PlayStation Vita and its predecessor PlayStation Portable were briefly mentioned. Ryan’s comment was very clear: “The PlayStation Vita was brilliant in many ways, and the actual gaming experience was great, but it’s obvious that this is a business in which we no longer participate.”
The true end of the PlayStation Vita came at the beginning of this year, when in March Sony Interactive Entertainment finished the production of the portable console, which coincided with the previously announced end date for the distribution of free games for it to PlayStation Plus subscribers. Since March 2019, only projects for the PlayStation 4 are offered in the monthly selection of the service.
Former president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, Andrew House also told GameInformer that Ken Kutaragi was “especially reluctant” to enter the portable market with the PlayStation Portable. According to House, Kutaragi (then chairman of Sony Computer Entertainment) accurately predicted how smartphones would revolutionize the mobile gaming market: “I think he really foresaw the growth of smartphones before anyone heard about the iPhone. I remember how he talked about the convergence of all forms of media and entertainment into a single communication device. ”
