Police used tear gas against Hong Kong protesters

Today, January 19, in the central park of Hong Kong, many residents gathered for a rally. Despite the police ban, there were about a thousand protesters. According to a DW source, protesters began to dig up cobblestones and build barricades in neighboring streets.
Tear gas was used against the protesters; some of the protesters were detained. Protesters in response attacked law enforcement officers and beat some of them. Two policemen were injured.
Recall that the protests in Hong Kong began in the spring of 2019 due to the authorities’ plans to adopt a law on extradition of offenders at the request of the Chinese authorities. A little later, the administration decided to abandon their plans, but protests continue.
