Until the end of 2025, Ukrainian winemakers have the right to use the words "cognac" and "champagne" in the names of their products. Including one that is sold for export. This was told by the director general of the corporation "Ukrvinprom" Vladimir Kucherenko on Facebook.
According to him, today the grape and wine industry of Ukraine is operating in a transitional period.
“Despite the obligations undertaken to abandon a number of geographical names of the EU, in particular“ cognac ”and“ champagne ”, we have the right to use the names until the end of 2025. However, as a result of a political decision at the time of signing the Association Agreement, it was not envisaged to provide compensation previously agreed upon during negotiations or technical assistance to Ukrainian wine producers in case of refusal to use the geographical indications of European countries in the names of Ukrainian wines and cognacs. Note that according to experts, the transition to new names is in any case associated with significant financial losses for the Ukrainian wine industry - this is a significant burden on enterprises. However, Ukrainian manufacturers are working on these changes, although work on reconciling new names is long-term, ”said Vladimir Kucherenko, CEO of Ukrvinprom Corporation.
