The national team of Ukraine won 1 medal at the last stage of the WKF Premier League 2019 (Karate1 Premier League), which was held November 29 - December 1 in Madrid (Spain).
The only achievement of the Ukrainian team at the tournament in Madrid was the bronze award of the 25-year-old athlete Galina Melnik. This was reported by the press service of the Ukrainian Karate Federation.
“The European champion in the team, Galina Melnik, saved the Ukraine’s reputation. She started the tournament with victories over rivals from Italy and Kazakhstan, then lost to the Azerbaijanis (0: 3), who reached the final. In secret skirmishes, Galina first defeated the Belarusian (2: 0), and in the bronze final she defeated the Canadian Melissa Bratich - 3: 0, "the message said.
Competitions were held in the Madrid Arena sports complex with the participation of 737 athletes from 89 countries. Ukraine was represented by 19 athletes.
Note that now the best positions in the Olympic ranking are Angelika Terlyuga (-55kg, No. 2) and Stanislav Goruna (-75 kg, No. 6). However, in Madrid they were not lucky: Terluga in the second round lost to young Estonians Lee Lirisman, European champion 2018 (U-21), and Goruna lost to the experienced German Noah Bitsch in the first fight.
In general, 2019 turned out to be extremely successful for Ukrainian karate: at official WKF tournaments, athletes of the national team received 26 individual medals.
