Officially completed the construction of the Tokyo National Stadium, which will host the Olympic Games in 2020, Reuters writes.
The official opening will be on December 21, and the final of the Emperor’s Cup will be the first sporting event to be held there.
“We are very pleased that the construction of the stadium - a key symbol of the Tokyo 2020 Games - is now complete; it makes us realize how close we are to the start of the Games, ”said Tokyo 2020 CEO Toshiro Muto.
He added that he was looking forward to seeing athletes from around the world in the new stadium during the opening ceremony.
The stadium, built for more than $ 1.25 billion, can accommodate up to 60,000 people. In addition, athletics and football competitions will be held there during the Tokyo 2020 Games.
Construction began in December 2016, about 14 months later than planned, after the initial project was canceled due to public outcry over rising costs.
The delay meant that the stadium could not accept the matches of the Rugby World Cup, as originally planned.
After several renovations after the Games, which should be completed at the end of 2022, the stadium will host sports and cultural events for many years to come.
