State Hydrography of Ukraine has found a new destination of the Azov Sea: we can create a water border with Russia there!
At present, the State Hydrography of Ukraine insists on the immediate start of the so-called "voluntary-forced" negotiations with the Russian Federation on the maritime border in the Sea of Azov. It is believed that it should take place exactly where, after the annexation of Crimea in 2014, a dispute broke out over the shipping territory of both countries.
Earlier, the State Hydrography had already made proposals for the creation of a certain regime maritime area. Then the area around the annexed Crimea became the chosen territory. This idea was considered not very successful, they did not believe in its success, so they rejected it. Today, the State Hydrography has strong arguments and even references to a similar situation when two states, Australia and East Timor, peacefully and voluntarily entered into a delimitation agreement in 2018. Yes, the case is not identical, but it can serve as a good example to start negotiations and to stimulate a deal.
This idea is commented on by the Ukrainian international lawyer, the representative of the President of Ukraine in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, Boris Babin: "Ukraine today can unilaterally define these maritime borders with Russia, since the land is clearly marked, and then convene an international commission to reach its first conclusion." Babin confidently and persistently stresses that after the change of government in Russia, they will be forced to recognize the demarcation offered by the international community.
So far, there has been no reaction from the Russian side.
